"A refinery sits near my home in Northern Virginia. Visible from the road, I’ve often driven by it at night, when the size and scope of its glow dominates the landscape. One evening, I noticed that the smoke emanating from its towers had a particularly clear and dare I say…beautiful look. Their dispatch appeared like pretty, white fluffy clouds naturally floating up into the night sky…a scene belying this structure’s true nature. This unique photographic print on Dura-Lar polyester film visualizes this dichotomy in semi-abstract form. Showcasing this “cloud” while the edges of the image appear to decay, dissolve and encroach provides a visual metaphor apropos of the issues surrounding our collective industrial complex."
