Learn about "True to Form" - a solo show featuring queer conceptual portraits by Sophie Spinelle true to form. sophie spinelle solo show | feb 5 - 28, 2026 The Imperfecta Gallery is excited to present True To Form: Queer Conceptual Portraits by Sophie Spinelle. On view February 5-28 2026, the show includes portraits made by the photographer in collaboration with participants across a wide range of queer identities and lived experiences. This new body of work centers on notions of agency, authorship, and the constructed nature of visibility. Sophie Spinelle is a gender radical, queer organizer, and a devoted mother of two who crafts photographs to upend assumptions about bodies, gender, queerness, and neurodivergence. Her identity-focused portrait projects amplify the voices and visions of queer, BIPOC, disabled, and neurodivergent people through collaborative portrait creation. “At a cultural moment in which queer lives are both newly visible and increasingly contested,” explains the artist, “the images part of this solo show reflect personal histories and ways of knowing and living gender.” The show debuts on February 5, with an Opening Reception from 5 to 8pm. About Sophie Spinelle Sophie Spinelle explores themes of glamour, queerness, and identity in deeply collaborative ways to reveal the longings, losses, and power of her subjects. She studied painting at Sarah Lawrence College before turning her focus to photography in 2009. Spinelle’s photographs have been exhibited in the United States and Europe, and published in The New York Times, People, and SFMoMA on the Go. - perfectly imperfect (nov 2024) | imperfecta.xyz
perfectly imperfect. group show | nov 9-30, 2024 Perfectly Imperfect, a group art show that featured 27 artists based in the US, UK, Italy, Spain, Chile and Mexico, was on view from November 9th to the 31st, 2024. The show featured new original artworks by artists Ágata Pérez, Alexis Marcie Bomarito, Amelia Johannsen, Arianna Gazca, Bea Garth, Bernadette Fox, Daria Loi, Deborah Donelson, Francesca Dalla Benetta, Francesca Loi, Holly de Saillan, Jacqueline Myers-Cho, Kate Reed, Laura Pedrini, Linda Tarr, Mimma Scarpini, Natasha Martinovic, Rosa Henriquez, Ruth Meijer, Sage Kemmerlin, Sena Clara Creston, Sandra Alderman, Sue Schaefer, Strauss-McQueen, Wynter Jones, Zarod Rominski and Zexuan Jia. Artists were challenged to explore notions of imperfection and the beauty of imperfect uniqueness by creating monochromatic artworks in any medium. The 27 artworks on show included oil and acrylic paintings, ceramic art, art dolls, bronze sculptures, multimedia art, mixed media art, fiber art, ink and pencil drawings and photography. Artists Strauss-McQueen stated that "perfection is a mirage -- and yet, as humans we aspire with amusing naivety to this unattainable plane." Their piece, entitled Per[fiction], poetically demonstrates this paradox. Ceramist Linda Tarr, who created a tonal percussion instrument, reflected: "to assume imperfection enables risk" and art doll maker Zexuan Jia created a cat that is "attempting to sew herself back together" because "it is perfectly fine to be flawed" if you try to "pull everything together." Multimedia artist Arianna Gazca, leveraging dark color schemes, expressed the "feeling of emptiness, uncertainty, and ominous ambiguity" associated with notions of imperfection. While Kate Reed explored "how even a person who is "perfect" can often only see their own perceived imperfections," Natasha Martinovic depicted "the moment of acceptance of oneself and one's imperfections as a sign of individuality and self-knowledge." The above statements are a small sample of the powerful stories and interpretations of what imperfection may mean and represent. As Amelia Johannsen put it, "in a world driven by ideals of perfection", imperfections are not failures, but "marks of life, evidence of growth, resilience, and adaptation."

Welcome to Imperfecta Arts Collective, a program that aims to elevate the arts by focusing on three key goals: hosting engaging art events, offering art residencies, and providing professional workshops for artists. By mixing local and international artists, this initiative will foster cultural exchange, enrich the community, and amplify diverse creative voices. Imperfecta Arts Collective is a complex and resource-demanding, as supporting the logistical costs of hosting art events while providing the resources necessary for artist residencies and professional workshops are costly endeavors. To successfully execute this program, we seek a combination of public, private, and individual funding sources -- this is the only way for us to not only run the program but also ensure its sustainability over time. This is why I am excited that the Imperfecta Arts Collective was recently granted fiscal sponsorship with Fractured Atlas , an international program that offers tax-deductible contributions to artists and art organizations whose projects qualify. Please support Imperfecta Arts Collective by making a tax deductible donation today by clicking on the Fractured Atlas star logo below. Here are the three key goals of the Collective and how we are planning to bring them to life: Art Events to Engage the Local Community Host regular art exhibitions, pop-up galleries, and community art events featuring both local and international artists. Offer interactive experiences such as live painting sessions, artist talks, and hands-on workshops, inviting the community to actively engage with diverse artists and artistic processes. Create a platform for diverse artistic expressions, including underrepresented voices, to elevate the art culture and create a deeper connection between diverse communities and artists. Art Residencies Provide a supportive environment for both emerging and established artists by offering dedicated space, resources, and exposure within Oregon City and its neighboring communities. The residencies will blend local and international artists, fostering cross-cultural collaboration and innovation. Artists will contribute to the community through open studios, collaborative projects, and outreach activities. The goal is to encourage artistic growth, creativity, and the sharing of global perspectives, thereby elevating the overall art culture within the region. Professional Workshops for Artists Offer workshops and training sessions in various disciplines, including painting, sculpture, digital art, and business skills like marketing and branding. Facilitate mentorship opportunities by connecting local artists with international art professionals, encouraging cultural exchange and knowledge-sharing. Provide an inclusive space for networking, skill-building, and career development, empowering local artists to enhance their craft and succeed in the global art scene. Curious to learn more ? Find here more details about the program. This project will significantly elevate the art culture in Oregon City and surrounding communities by fostering collaboration between local and international artists. Art events, residencies, and workshops will enrich the local cultural landscape, enhance community engagement, and provide valuable resources for artists to thrive. - call for collaborating artists | imperfecta.xyz
Learn how to join the imperfecta gallery call for collaborating artists. imperfecta was founded in 2023 with the goal of primarily showcasing and promoting women artists and underrepresented minority artists -- we do not exclude anyone yet our focus is to primarily support categories that are typically underrepresented in the art world. Because of that, we ensure that at least 80% of our artists are either women or underrepresented minorities. Artists can engage with imperfecta in 3 ways: by becoming a Gallery Artist, by joining as a Collaborative Artist, and by summitting work to open calls. This call for artists is for artists wishing to be considered as a Collaborating Artist , which means that - if selected - you would sign a non-exclusive agreement with imperfecta. At a high level, being a Collaborating Artist means that imperfecta would sell your consigned work in the gallery and online store for agreed periods of time and that work submitted to group shows would be automatically accepted, with no submission fees. For local artists it is key to know that Collaborating Artists can sell and exhibit non-consigned artworks where they wish, with the exception of any gallery, retailer, store or organization in a 5 miles radius of the Gallery. There is a 50% commission fee for all artists’ work sold at and through the gallery. Submissions To apply to be a Collaborating Artist at imperfecta, please submit all the below: 20 digital images of recent artwork a corresponding image inventory list a letter of intent a brief artist’s statement CV or resumé (inclusive of social media handles and website/portfolio). Send a link to all the above files via your Google Drive, Dropbox or similar online drive to imperfecta@studioloi.xyz with the subject line "Collaborating Artist Application." Applications sent in any other way will not be accepted - please do not send emails or DMs with attachments. Normally, I confirm receiving an application within 48 hours and send feedback (regardless of outcome) in 2 to 4 weeks. After the application review, some artists will be invited to an interview. Please reach out if you have any query about the application process - imperfecta@studioloi.xyz Selection Criteria While imperfecta focuses primarily on showcasing women artists and underrepresented minority artists, please do not hesitate applying if you feel that your work is a good fit for the gallery yet you are not in one of our priority categories. We accept applications from local as well as international artists and appreciate all art expressions, from paintings to sculptures, ceramics, art dolls, assemblages, interactive digital art, wearable art, etc. We accept applications from emerging, mid career or establishes artists that can demonstrate their level. A key criteria is whether your work fits in our gallery's focus areas. A look at our catalog and social media accounts quickly reveals that traditional fine art (e.g. oil paintings of landscapes, pets or flowers) is not our cup of tea. Also, while we like (and at times showcase) abstract art, we are not an abstract art gallery. The same goes for traditional photography: we like it yet not part of the gallery's focus. Please note that we are interested in contemporary art by contemporary artists. Due to that we are not interested in traditional, repeatable crafts (e.g. ceramic mugs, garden art, digital prints or assembly jewelry) and we are definitely not interested din any AI-generated work. A second criteria is whether your approach to your art as well as gallery representation is a good fit in relation to the gallery's philosophy. Unlike a number of commercial galleries, at imperfecta we prioritize gallery-artist relationship and mutual growth over transactional approaches that put sales at the center of all decision making. Don't get us wrong: we love selling our artists' work and are pretty good at it! Yet we never place profit above values and relationships.

show don't tell: implied narratives. marsha balian | april 2 - 25, 2026 The Imperfecta Gallery is excited to present Show, Don’t Tell: Implied Narratives, a solo show featuring new works by California artist Marsha Balian. In Show, Don’t Tell , Balian explores the intersection between visual and written stories. Her narrative work invites the viewer to conjure their own interpretations of what they see in a dynamic rather than a literal way. There are implicit narratives in the many layers of each complex piece, intended to evoke memories or ignite the viewer’s imagination. And the different, often disparate elements encourage repeated attention, which can generate new stories and meaning for the viewer. The artwork in Show, Don’t Tell is mixed media and includes decades worth of found materials and ephemera. Balian has meticulously employed drawing, painting, and collage in each piece. She is self-taught and has applied her own faux encaustic formula to the art in this show. She does not plan her work in advance and loves the element of mystery and surprise as she waits to see where the work itself takes her. About the artist Marsha Balian’s artwork has been shown throughout much of California, many parts of the country and internationally. Her work is placed in hospitals, a library and private collections. She has been featured in many publications, including Contemporary Collage Magazine in England and Collage in International Contemporary Art in Hungary. She was included in Collage by Women: 50 Women Collage Artists of the World, published in Spain and widely successful internationally.
