The relationship between a gallery and an artist is frequently defined by established and stipulated expectations. These stipulated boundaries are there to ensure a fair and transparent environment, to protect each party’s interests and uphold ethical practices. From that perspective, an artist circumventing a gallery by selling directly to a client living within that boundary could be a breach of contract. 

While it is nice to have gallery representation, I encourage artists to be intentional with which gallery you decide to be represented by and what they are seeking in that relationship.  This blog offers three considerations for artists to consider as they work to identify galleries that can suitably and successfully represent them and their hard work.
