Wistful Recollections of a Weary Vagabond (Jon MacNair)

India ink on paper; 11" x 14"

This piece is a follow-up companion piece to a similar work I made in 2008 called "Weary Vagabond." This new piece features the same character from the previous work in the same setting, although here the passage of time is apparent. The character has aged considerably and the landscape has also evolved slightly. It references those times in our lives where we have revisited and reconnected with places from our youth, having returned a changed person who has experienced the ups and downs of life. Now an older and wiser version of our former selves, we reflect on the past through a wistful lense. Like the character in the work, I too have aged and experienced much more of life since I made that first drawing. And just as the landscape has evolved, so too has my drawing technique. In revisiting this work with a changed perspective on life, I am much like the older character depicted in it, returning to a place from the past that feels both new and also strangely familiar.
