Albany, State of New York - October 1927
Little Alice loved being in her father’s fabric shop. She used to say that when she grew up, she would make beautiful dresses out of those colorful fabrics. She often built a fort out of fabric scraps, playing with her doll and singing little rhyming songs inside it. One afternoon, after saying goodbye to a customer, her father went to look for his daughter. He found the fort made of multicolored fabrics and heard a song drifting from deep within that tangle of cloth—a strange, unfamiliar song about horrible things and misfortunes. The deep voice was not his little girl’s; it belonged to the changeling that had taken Alice’s place.
