"Honeybees are vital to our ecosystem, pollinating over 75% of the world‘s crops. In recent years, their populations are declining at an alarming rate, putting a real threat onto the world‘s food source. Contributing factors are pesticides, habitat loss, and climate change, and although this is a known fact, people continue to use things that are killing off our bees and threatening our future ability to produce food. I also rely on honeybees for my encaustic art, as beeswax is one of the main ingredients. Last spring, my husband and I became beekeepers, a dream I had for many years. Our hive was thriving, until it wasn’t. Yellowjackets got some of our bees and then many just mysteriously died. When winter came, I thought it was all over, but as spring approached, my hive came alive. Although it is much smaller, there is much activity happening inside. I treasure these bees as I see they’re importance in our ecosystem and the art that I love to make. Carefully choose what you use around your home, this is important for all of us.
