matte giclee print - limited edition of 10

Taueret, a queer femme organizer and activist in New York, was one of my earliest and closest collaborators. We did dozens of shoots together, but this one felt different. We told each other the story of our friendship, of the work we’d done as activists and artists. We cried. She brought many outfits, but this was the one she loved most. I had shot it on a red backdrop, but in editing, it demanded black—an unexpected choice in our usually buoyant, saturated sessions.
When I sent her the image, she said, “You capture me like no one ever has.” Those were her last words to me. Not long after, Taueret died by suicide. This photograph now holds both the beauty and complexity of her life and the gravity of the loss.
