‘Rise - a musical composition’ is like most of my work, inspired by the grace of musical law. I explore the intricacies of counterpoint, harmony, musical colour and balance through pattern and variations. At 21 I travelled to Ireland where I became very unwell with psychosis. Music played non stop in my head. A cacophony of unconstructed endless melodies with no final cadences. The kindness of an Irish landlord saved me from the streets and friends fed me. Extraordinarily I regained my health without intervention and made it back to Australia. I rebuilt my life, studied music, married and had a family. I have now been teaching music in early childhood for nearly 30 years. With time and distance I now have the courage to explore my past experiences using collage. I am primarily interested in the construction, balance, tones and colour of musical form as it sits in direct opposition to the trauma of my illness. Without the primary foundations needed to work with musical frequency the human spirit and creation energy cannot fully emerge.
